I visit schools to promote apprenticeships every month and have taken part in web cam work shops to promote apprenticeships.
We benefited tremendously through the National Apprenticeship Week campaign and the resources from the Amazing Apprenticeship champions toolkit. I was able to create a prezi including the video and poster resources. Throughout the week this was presented to every tutor group at Aquinas – roughly 2,000 students. View our prezi here.
We have an Apprenticeship Bulletin newsletter posted directly to students, even after they have left us. We are building strong links with local businesses to release vacancies at the right time for our school leavers and to give them first look at new opportunities before advertising. We are also working with the local council to encourage small local businesses to take apprentices, by negotiating financial assistance.
I am organising a "Secret Employer" event, where Employers/Training Providers will be invited into our Year 10 lessons to sit at the back of the class. The students will think that the staff member is being observed but it's actually the students. They will be looking at how students enter the room, dress code, interaction with staff and students and also engagement in the lesson.
I invited Employers into school for "pop-up" shop sessions. Students were given a schedule of visitors through their form tutors and invited to come along to our library at lunchtime to meet them and ask questions.
My own apprentice developed display stands for our Crawley and Haywards Heath Campus. She worked with marketing and assessors to identify Apprentices of the day and apprenticeship vacancy of the day. She promoted all of the activities through our social media which helped to support her own studies.
Coca Cola selected us as one of the three schools in Wakefield that they attended for an assessment day for level 4 apprenticeships. Our students were magnificent, and I’m driving the minibus to take them to the selection day at the Coca Cola plant on 28th March – we’re all really excited!

We hosted an Apprenticeship & School Leaver Programme event at the school with 300+ visitors through the doors. Although we hosted the event we opened it up to students, young people and their parents across the whole of South Gloucestershire. The event was promoted through the ‘Employability & Skills Network’, social media and local press. We also had students attend from schools in Bristol and Gloucestershire.
I have developed an industry mentor scheme which enables young people to work with apprenticeship providers before they apply for one to develop key employability skills. After the successful development of this programme I then developed an Employer Led Programme which incorporates employability skills and apprenticeship provider information into the curriculum and is no longer just an add on to our current offer.
We have recently established in school 'ambassadors' within STEM subjects who will receive specialist training on apprenticeships and be informed of vacancies within their subject specialisms - giving students, parents and staff designated key people to contact for information and guidance.
We have successfully introduced students to a range of apprenticeship opportunities through planned activities including working lunches and apprenticeship "speed dating" sessions.
I am working on labor market information that highlights growing sector areas in the region and the need for apprentices to build the future workforce.
I am raising awareness of apprenticeships with staff in school and advocating that all Sixth form tutors become Apprenticeship Champions.
I have created worksheets for use with iPads containing QR codes that link to the website to develop independent research and ensure students are competent to use the website.
