The annual census will be expanded to encompass the views of those aged 11-30 to give an even broader view of the landscape of young people. Focussing on education, work, job hunting, prospects and opportunity, the 2021 census uncovered how the youth of the UK were feeling in the wake of the pandemic and included a section dedicated to apprenticeships.
“We are pleased to be once again sponsoring Youth Employment UK’s Youth Voice Census. The wealth of insight the census offers into the feeling of young people and their outlook is invaluable,” said Founder and Director of Amazing Apprenticeships, Anna Morrison CBE. “Expanding the age range will offer insight from those who have been out of education for a longer period with more experience of the opportunities presented to young people post-education, as well as those embarking on their initial steps in senior education and towards a career path. We are curious to see how this impacts the stats, especially around prospects as the later age range will have more experience of job searching.”
The 2021 census painted an interesting picture when it came to apprenticeships and alternative career pathways. While 78% of apprentices felt they had made the right choice and a massive 85% rated their apprenticeship as good or excellent, only 19% had felt supported by their school when applying, less than 10% felt confident in finding work locally and almost 70% of young people had not heard of either T Levels or traineeships.
“It will be interesting to see how the landscape has changed in the past 12 months. Last year’s census proved that there was still a lot of work to be done,” continues Morrison. “It’s incredibly important that as many young people as possible complete the survey so we gather a wide range of views to inform the findings. We encourage each of our audiences; teachers, employers, parents and carers, training providers and young people themselves to share the census with their networks and encourage those aged 11-30 to take the time to complete it.”
The census launched on 31st March and can be accessed via the Youth Employment UK website.
