What makes us a great employer

Earn while you learn

Apprenticeship Programmes are a great way to earn and learn! Our Programmes offer the perfect blend of personal and professional development, exposing you to the core of our business. Entering an apprenticeship scheme with us involves working towards the role of a fully-fledged professional, earning a salary, whilst also being able to maintain a sense of academic achievement. At Severn Trent we provide the perfect mix between hands-on experience and a formal qualification, enabling our apprentices to make a real lasting difference to our customers and communities, not just for now, but far into the future.

Permanent roles

All of our Apprenticeship Programmes offer a permanent contract. Once you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship with us, we will have an off-scheme role ready for you.

Time off

Time off from work is important for our wellbeing. We offer you 25 days holiday a year, with the option of buying/selling up to 5 days per year. On top of that, we will provide you with 2 Volunteer Days each year.

Our Academy

We are lucky here at Severn Trent that we have our own learning Academy (located in Finham, Coventry). Every employee has access to loads of opportunities, whether that’s in person or online, to learn via courses or e-learning provided by the Academy. As it’s also a learning provider, you might attend the Academy as part of your apprenticeship training!

Wherever you want to have an impact, we have opportunities for you across Operations, STEM and Business.

You can explore all Apprenticeship opportunities on our careers page.

Operation Apprenticeships

With an operational apprenticeship, you’ll work in a business area that enables you to do practical, technical, hands-on work.

You could work as part of a team in wastewater treatment, drinking water production, network maintenance or landowner liaison.

Some of our apprenticeships in 2025 are:

  • Apprentice Tanker Driver (Level 2)
  • Apprentice Waste Network Technician (Level 3)
  • Apprentice Technical Operator (Level 2)
  • Apprentice Workshop Coordinator (Level 3)

You will have the opportunity to work on key projects within that business area; whether it be as a Sustainability Analyst, Process Engineer, Environmental Practitioner or Cyber Security, you will play a key role in allowing us to deliver on our big goals and ambitions whilst helping us to protect our environment.

Some of our apprenticeships in 2025 are:

  • Apprentice Civil Engineer (Level 6)

In 2025, we will be recruiting for:

  • Apprentice HR Consultant (Level 5)

Applying for our Apprenticeships

  1. Start

  2. 1

We recommend you start by visiting our careers page and exploring all of the opportunities we have. We split our roles into 3 categories: Business, Operations and STEM. If you’re not too sure about which area is right for you, you can take the Find Your Fit Careers Quiz.

We hold a number of events throughout the year, and especially during National Apprenticeship Week (10th – 14th February). Why not check out where we’re going to be so you can come and meet us? You can see this on our Events page.

  3. 2

Once you have decided which role you want to apply to, you will be asked to create a profile and complete a short application form. This will include your basic details, equal opportunities questions and eligibility requirements. Please make sure you read the job advert in full and check you meet the requirements, as they differ for every role.

If you are applying for a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship, we will also ask you some motivation questions.

  4. 3

If you meet the basic entry criteria, you will be invited to complete our situational judgement test. We have created an interactive, branded portal which will give you scenarios you might face while working at Severn Trent. You will be asked to rank how you would respond from most to least likely. It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about the work we do.

For some of our Operational roles, this is the only testing you will be required to complete.

  5. 4

If you are successful in the Situational Judgement Test, you will be invited to complete our working with numbers test. This will be for all Business and STEM roles, and some of our Ops roles.

You will be presented with a series of numerical questions and we suggest you use a calculator.

  6. 5

The final stage of our process will be an in-person assessment centre. This will take place at one of our offices (e.g. Severn Trent Centre or Raynesway) or one of our sites (e.g. Shelton).

Every candidate will be expected to complete a group activity and an interview. Depending on your role, you may be asked to complete a presentation in advance and deliver it to hiring managers on the day.

After this, we will make our decisions and extend offers of employment to successful candidates!

  7. 6

Every successful candidate will have to complete some pre-employment screening before their Apprenticeship begins in September.

During this time, our programme managers will make sure they keep in touch with you. We often organise events for our offer holders, which is a great opportunity to meet your peer group before you join!

Need some extra support?

You will be able to let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments in your application form. We will endeavour to accommodate whatever support you need to ensure you perform to the best of your abilities. Don’t worry if you forgot to include this in your application, or if something changes along the way; just get in touch and our New Talent Recruitment Team can take details over the phone and discuss how best we can support you.

Please be aware that the Apprentice Assistance Water Network Technician requires individuals to listen for leaking pipes. The Apprentice Maintenance Technician requires individuals to identify electrical wiring. Therefore, you will be asked about any health restrictions that might impact your ability to complete these tasks.

If you receive an offer to join Severn Trent, you will complete an occupational health form as part of your onboarding. This is where you can disclose anything to us that we should be aware of, and we can work with you to ensure you have everything you need for your place of work and studies.
