about Royal Navy apprenticeships

Think an apprenticeship means being stuck in a classroom all day? Think again. With the Royal Navy you’ll be learning on the job and applying your newfound skills in real work situations.

Your apprenticeship begins after basic training, or during if you’re joining the Royal Marines. The course is a mix of theory and work-based learning, with a few formal interviews and practical assessments along the way.

Your time will roughly be split at 20% learning and 80% working, which means you’ll be an important member of the team from day one, gaining new skills at the same time as developing your knowledge.

We offer more than 20 apprenticeships across a wide variety of roles. You’ll get a competitive salary from day one, travel the world, be empowered to make a difference – and supported to get further, faster. As an apprentice in the Royal Navy, you will:

  • Work alongside experienced and highly trained personnel
  • Gain and develop job-specific skills
  • Earn a wage from day one and get six weeks of paid holiday
  • Study towards a range of vocational qualifications
  • Have a guaranteed job on completion of your training

Our Three Schemes

There are three main schemes – rating roles (intermediate apprenticeships), Accelerated Apprenticeships (Fast Track) and the Undergraduate Apprenticeship Scheme (UGAS). So, whether you’re a school leaver, have qualifications you want to build on or want to retrain without going back into education, there’s a place for you.

Completing your apprenticeship usually takes 12-18 months, but that’s just the start of your journey. Show potential and work hard, and in return you’ll have all the support you need to progress quickly.

Rating Roles

Learn on the job and earn a wage at the same time as studying for an intermediate apprenticeship qualification. Later in your career you’ll also have the opportunity to gain other civilian recognised qualifications, which may include an advanced or higher apprenticeship. As you learn your trade, you’ll progress through the ranks on merit, with the chance to be selected for officer training at any point.

Accelerated Apprenticeships

If you’re interested in an engineering career and studied at college, gaining a Level 3 Diploma or A-levels in Maths and Physics, you could be eligible for the Accelerated Apprenticeship Scheme. You’ll start as a rating at Leading Hand – two ranks higher than most Engineering Technicians – building on your existing knowledge and earning £31,000 from day one. You can choose air, submarine, weapon or marine engineering, getting the opportunity to enhance your skill set on the job and through world-class training.

UGAS

If you’re planning to study engineering at university, you could be eligible for one of the world’s most respected apprenticeships – and get your degree paid for by the Royal Navy.

The Undergraduate Apprenticeship Scheme (UGAS) is exclusively for the Submarine Service, where our most elite engineers work on everything from cutting-edge sonar to nuclear reactors. You’ll join as a Leading Hand before being fast tracked to Petty Officer, getting paid up to £45,000 and an additional £5,000 when you receive your Dolphins, at the same time as studying for a BEng (Hons) in Electronic or Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
